what will sonny do with the money

The stash of money that Sonny has, only grew until he moved to The Flowers. His way of copping with his own guilt, about steeling was to not spend it, all though when he moved to The Flowers he slowly began to spend. After he found out about Cloyds cash reserve, he decides to eventually replenish his own stash with Cloyd,s, and becomes more frivolous about his spending. Even though he finds security in having a cash reserve, he is afraid that he will be found out. I believe that this will eventually cause him to leave the flowers and try to take Nica with him.
I do not believe I would be inclined to take the money, because I tend to look at situations from the other persons perspective. I think I would try to be more compassionate towards Cloyd, and find my security in building a better relationship with him.

  1. You have presented an interesting Formalist analysis of the book here because you have tracked the progression of Sonny's spending habits and linked this information from the text to your analysis. Good work! I agree that he is coping with the stress of his life at The Flowers and also that he is experimenting with the power and struggle of "becoming a man" and the money is his way of "trying out" his manhood. He seems torn between the legitimacy of working for money and stealing money. Here again, we see the power of Cloyd's influence, which you blogged about earlier. When Cloyd doesn't pay him for the sign painting, Sonny responds by stealing. The subtle influences of Cloyd's behavior on Sonny are very interesting and real to me and part of the reason I like this book so much. Great work on thinking and writing about the reading!
